Our region by the numbers...health needs identified in 2013:
In 2010, 5,727 people in Kentucky dies of coronary heart disease compared to 16.3 million people dies of it nationwide. It is the number one cause of death in Kentucky. (USA Life Expectancy, 2010; U.S. National Library of Medicine 2011)
In 2010, the national average for the U.S. for drug abuse is 13%. Kentucky's average is 17.9%! (Blanchard, 2013)
In 2011 the Kentucky average for underage drinking, ages 5-20, was 37.8%, while the national average is 21.9%-33% in 2011. (OJJDP, 2011; The Century Council, ND)

Because Owensboro is located in a valley, pollution and smog settles closer to the ground, taking a tremendous hit on air quality. With the addition of tobacco use, Owensboro sees about "220 smoking-related deaths...every year", whereas the country has "national median of 263 people" (USA Today 2009, Tobacco Truth 2011).
Note: Although the nation's stats are higher, Daviess County's stats are considerably large compared to other small counties.
According to the GRADD, the percentage of obese adults with a "BMI of 30.0 or higher" In 23% in 2008 but since then has gone up to 29% compared to the state stats

Skin Cancer-This dangerous cancer is surprisingly high for our region and Kentucky as a whole. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in our state. Kentucky has the 6th highest melanoma death rates nationally, 17% higher than the U.S. average. Bowling Green, only 1 hour away from Owensboro, is an astonishing 81% above the national average. (EPA, 2010)
Heart Disease- In the Green River District, 5 out of the 7 counties are over the national average of deaths due to heart disease. (GRADD, 2010) This has led to 1 in 4 deaths in Kentucky being caused by heart disease. (CDC, 2009)
Sexually Transmitted Diseases- Daviess County is suffering from an excess of STDs or Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Daviess County has 474 out of 100,000 people with STDs. However, the USA benchmark has a goal of only 92 out off 100,000 people with STDs. Daviess CO has almost 5x the amount of STDs than the goal. (Wood Johnson, 2013)

Smoking is a major problem in our community. According to a poll taken by the CDC, 19% of people in America are smokers. In Kentucky, 30% of people are smokers (CDC, 2011).
Unemployment rates are becoming a big issue towards our economy. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, 6.9%, or 6,751, citizens of Daviess County are unemployed; while 9.5%, or 416,139 , people in Kentucky are living without a job (BLS, 2013).
