I was pleasantly surprised with our first 2065 meeting. I thought it was efficient to split into groups to decide health factors under mental, social, and physical health. This allowed for us to concentrate on specific areas rather than their previously broad spectrum of focus. It was particularly difficult to narrow down which factors (laws, regulations, events etc.) fit under which category. We concluded that though almost all factors effect mental, social, and physical health, it was our task to decide which factors would yield the best improvement in our assigned category. I look forward to the continuation of our discussion!
The room we walked into was full of influential people. City commissioners, CEOs, and other leaders from all around town were there to give their input. The amazing part of the meeting was that they cared what us six high school students thought about our community. We talked and shared ideas about what we want Owensboro to look like. No smoking, a healthy vibe from society, more physical activity were all ideas we wanted to see implemented. It's not going to be easy, and it will be a lot of work, but we are laying the foundation for Owensboro to become a healthier place to live.
I greatly enjoyed my experience at the 2065 meeting. At the meeting, we discussed with community leaders what the future health of Owensboro should look like and how our community can achieve that goal. In my health group- social health- our discussion was focused on how the interactions between citizens in Owensboro can be improved to benefit the city's overall well being. Many of our ideas involved increased participation in local government, greater awareness of community racial diversity, and fewer barriers between the various age groups in Owensboro.
Owensboro 2065 is one of the most exciting community organizations I have ever had the opportunity to be a part of. I feel like the ideas that we've generated, although they are still in the brainstorming process, have real merit and potential in the hands of such experienced people. It's an amazing feeling to be able to communicate with these leaders and know that my thoughts are being heard.
The 2065 meeting was fantastic! I feel so honored and privileged that I can participate in such a great project. I was in the mental health group. We had a great discussion, although, some tensions arose. Mental health is a very hard subject to dissect because it is so dependent on physical and social health. Our main focus was to working on getting more specialists of mental health in the area. Also, we discussed on just building a better and safer community so that people in the future may feel more at ease. Overall, it was a great experience and I can not wait for the next meeting!
The Greater Owensboro- Vision 2065 meeting is an initiative to improve Owensboro’s physical, mental, and social health in the long-term future in 50 years. There were many community leaders and workers at the meeting. The meeting began with a video on social health, mental health, and physical health that showed us new things that we are seeing now and that we can see in the future. Next, we were divided into our designated health sector (mine was social) and we began the first activity where we all looked at possible future scenarios and we decided whether each scenario was under social, physical, or mental health. We concluded that each scenario required all the health sectors to work together in some way. This was interesting, as we got to see different approaches to possibilities in the future. After, we discussed with one another of any problems or things we could solve or innovate regarding social health (relationships, awareness, events, etc.), and we brainstormed ideas that we could implement for the future- in 2065. I even got to share some of my own and my class’s ideas as to what we could do to better Owensboro socially in the future. Also, some eye-opening facts were brought up that many people in Owensboro struggle or struggled in the past to have certain necessities like plumbing, sewage, housing, etc. and we thought of ways to eradicate and improve these conditions. All in all, the 2065 meeting was very fascinating and I can’t wait to attend the next meeting to improve and innovate the city of Owensboro in the future!
